god refuge strength Psalm 46-1

Psalm 46:1
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Psalm 46:7
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

Psalm 46:11
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

Holy and Mighty God
You are our refuge and strength
You are near- a present help well proved

You are victorious over every conflict-
every division, destruction, and deficiency
The conflict between nations
The conflict within my own nation
The conflict in my city
My family
Your church
The conflict in my heart

You are my refuge… my refuge… my refuge
You are my strength… my strength… my strength
You are near… near… near
A present help well proved

I am in awe before you
I am safe and seen before you
I am humble
I need you
I am grateful
I am yours
I am still

Friendship Prayer (Sirach 6.14-17)

prayer group handsSirach 6:14-17
Faithful friends are a sturdy shelter:
Whoever finds one has found a treasure.
Faithful friends are beyond price;
No amount can balance their worth.
Faithful friends are life-saving medicine;
and those who fear the Lord will find them.
Those who fear the Lord direct their friendship aright,
for as they are, so are their neighbors also.

Holy One, come
Help me to be this kind of friend
Faith-full
Sheltering
A Treasure Beyond Price
Life-saving Blessing and Balm

Let people find this in me
Because you are within me
Because you are this for me

Let me find this in others
For you are with and within them as well
You are this for us all

The instrumental accompaniment begins before the first reading and continues until the song’s conclusion.

ONE OR ALL SPEAKING: Psalm 62:5-6 NRSV
For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from Him.
He alone is my Rock and my Salvation,
My Fortress; I shall not be shaken.

ALL SINGING:
Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah, pilgrim through this barren land.
I am weak, but Thou art mighty; hold me with Thy powerful hand.
Bread of Heaven, Bread of Heaven, feed me till I want no more
Feed me till I want no more

ONE OR ALL SPEAKING: Psalm 62:7-8 NRSV
On God rests my deliverance and my honor;
My Mighty Rock, my Refuge is in God.
Trust in Him at all times, O people;
Pour out your heart before Him;
God is a refuge for us.

ALL SINGING:
Open now the crystal fountain, whence the healing stream doth flow;
Let the fire and cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through.
Strong Deliverer, Strong Deliverer, be Thou still my Strength and Shield.
Be Thou still my Strength and Shield.

Prayer for Violent Times

Photo by John Tlumacki/Globe Staff following the Boston Marathon explosions

Psalm 46:1 NRSV
God is our refuge and our strength, a very present help in times of trouble.

God our Refuge, calm our hearts when evil abounds
They run to lonesome places, screaming an alarm
Calm our hearts so we can find you above the fear

God our Strength, calm our hearts when evil abounds
They race to revenge, pounding with anger
Calm our hearts so we can hear you above the hammering

God our Help, calm our hearts when evil abounds
They rush to human strength, grasping for control
Calm our hearts so we can hold to your way, your truth, and your life

Calm our hearts, so they may beat in unison with yours
So healing may flow over bodies and spirits broken by the chaos
So hope may fill families and communities devastated by violence
So compassion and peace and unity may rise up among all people

God our Strength, our Refuge, our Help
We entrust our lives to you. Amen.
