Devotion: True Wealth

Click Here: Nicest Canadian couple in world dole out lottery winnings
A retired Canadian couple who won $11.3 million in the lottery in July have already given it (almost) all away.

“What you’ve never had, you never miss,” 78-year-old Violet Large explained to a local reporter.

She was undergoing chemotherapy treatment for cancer when the couple realized they’d won the jackpot in July.

“That money that we won was nothing,” her tearful husband, Allen, told Patricia Brooks Arenburg of the Nova Scotia Chronicle Herald. “We have each other.”

The money was a “headache,” they told the paper–mainly, it brought anxiety over the prospect that “crooked people” might take advantage of them. Several people called them out of the blue to ask for money when the news first broke that they’d won the jackpot. So they began an $11 million donation spree to get rid of it and help others…

Cash-Cross by David Hayward

There are people who have money and people who are rich. –Coco Chanel

1 Timothy 6:17-19 (NIV)
Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

Quotes: True Happiness

Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose. –Helen Keller

Psalm 106:3 (NRSV)
Happy are those who observe justice, who do righteousness at
all times.

Joy is a fruit of the Spirit,
not of our gratified emotions.
– Evelyn Underhill

Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.
–Theodore Roosevelt

Those who have learned the power of sincere and selfless contribution experience life’s deepest joy: true fulfillment. – Tony Robbins

Proverbs 14:21 (NRSV)
Those who despise their neighbors are sinners,
but happy are those who are kind to the poor.

Happiness is an unintended consequence
of working toward a goal larger than one’s self.
– Viktor Frankl

Bliss does not come from outside. It comes from inside, from serving the people.
Anna Hazare, Indian Activist

Psalm 41:1-2 (NRSV)
Happy are those who consider the poor; the Lord delivers them in the day of trouble. The Lord protects them and keeps them alive; they are called happy in the land. You do not give them up to the will of their enemies.

I don’t know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know:
the only ones among you who will be really happy
are those who will have sought and found how to serve.
– Albert Schweitzer

Trust and Obey by John H. Sammis (verse 1)
When we walk with the Lord
in the light of his word,
what a glory he sheds on our way!
While we do his good will,
he abides with us still,
and with all who will trust and obey.
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
