Your Healing Hands, a prayer based on Matthew 4

healing hand lightMatthew 4:12-17, 23-25
Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the lake, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

‘Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali,
on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light,
and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.’

From that time Jesus began to proclaim, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.’

Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people. So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought to him all the sick, those who were afflicted with various diseases and pains, demoniacs, epileptics, and paralytics, and he cured them. And great crowds followed him from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.

Jesus, Resurrected One
Light of New Life
Breaker of Chains
Bringer of Grace and Hope

You are moving, speaking, inviting
We hear your call to repentance, the turning will save us
We hear your Good News, the trusting will save us

We place every need into your healing hands
our loved ones, our enemies, ourselves
our work, our congregations, our denomination
our community, our nation, our world
our hopes, our security, our failures, our future

We place every need into your healing hands
We will find rest and wholeness there
Hallelujah, Glory to your Holy Name

Prayer: Hold Fast (Psalm 139:5-10)

hand-shoulderPsalm 139:5-10 NRSV
You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it.
Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there.
If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea,
even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me fast.

You, Mighty One, reach out your hand
Words spill from your mouth and worlds and all their wonders are created,
but for us you touch
You form
You choose the grit and slip of mud

Your hand is the tender hand of blessing
the confident hand of the artist
the calloused hand of the laborer
the open hand of welcome
the nail pierced hand of sacrifice
and grace

Your hand is the hand that guides me
I, the little child holding hands with One who knows the way
The hand on my shoulder,
strong and assuring when I am far from it
Holding me fast when I stumble into the darkness
The grip of grace when I careen towards the abyss
Holding me fast
Pulling me back from the pit
of despair
even death

You lay your hand upon me
Holding me fast on the far side of the sea
Holding me fast on the wings of the morning
Holding me fast no matter where I find myself
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me
