Prayer: Words and Ways
Your words and ways are
Perfect
Sure
Right
Clear

Your words and ways are
Pure
True
Righteous
Every one

Their value, beyond price
Their goodness, beyond delight
Their counsel, enduring blessing

Place in me a longing
To desire them
Become them
Every one

Prayer: Rock and Redeemer
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

Revive my soul
Make me wise
Re-joy my heart
Enlighten my eyes

Breath Prayers Based on the Hymn, My Hope is Built
IN: My hope is built on nothing less
OUT: than Jesus’ blood and righteousness

IN: On Christ the solid rock we stand
OUT:

IN: My anchor holds within the gale
OUT:

STILLNESS: Spend 5-20 minutes in silence looking to God and listening for God.

ATTENTION: Read or listen to the Scripture. What word, phrase, or verse captures your attention? Underline it or copy it onto a piece of paper.

CONNECTION: What connections do you see to other scriptures? To your own experience or current situation? Or, to the character or promises of God?

ACTION: What is God inviting you to trust, say, or do? How will your life be different because of this scripture?

Jesus, You are our Refuge
You are The Rock
You are our Strong Foundation
You are the Cornerstone

If we build our lives on you
We will not be shaken
Though the winds should howl and the waves should scream

If we build our lives on you
We will not be shaken
Though the job disappears and the nations war

If we build our lives on you
We will not be shaken
Though the virus spreads and the wicked seem to win

We will not be shaken
You are the One who calms the storm
You are the Provider
You are the Healer
You are Righter of Wrongs
You are Steadfast and Faithful Forever

You are the One who overcomes sin and death and shame
You are the Resurrection
The Rock who roles the stone away
You are near and You are good
You are strong to save

Holy is your Name

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord
We join with the angels
We join with the faithful who have gone before us
We join the entire company of heaven in praising your Name

Worship Resource: Praise the Lord, My Strength (Psalm 59)

This worship resource features selected verses from Psalm 59 and the timeless hymn Praise to the Lord, the Almighty. (United Methodist Hymnal #139, verses 1, 3, 5) Feel free to add more verses as desired. Feel free to use the traditional version of the hymn or consider Christy Nockels’ contemporary version made popular at the Passion Conference.

ALL SINGING:
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation.
O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation!
All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near, join me in glad adoration!

Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee;
Surely His goodness and mercy here daily attend thee
Ponder anew what the Almighty can do who with His love doth befriend thee

O my Strength, I will watch for You

Prayer: The Hidden Net (Psalm 31.1-5)

Frodo captured by the spider, Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Psalm 31:1-5 NRSV
In you, O Lord, I seek refuge; do not let me ever be put to shame; in your righteousness deliver me. Incline your ear to me; rescue me speedily. Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me. You are indeed my rock and my fortress; for your name’s sake lead me and guide me, take me out of the net that is hidden for me, for you are my refuge. Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.

There is a net that is hidden
It lies in the shadows
Blends into the background
Covert
Camouflaged
It waits patiently

It is just for me
It knows my weakness
Seizing my energy
Ensnaring me in falsehood
Entangling me in triggers
Wrapping me like a fly in a web
Sticky and shrouded in doubt and despair

Deliver me, my Refuge
Hear my cry, my Rock
My Righteous Redeemer

Through the power of your Son and Spirit
Liberate me from this entombing trap
Free me to your will and way

I seek You
You alone
Into Your hand, I commit my spirit

When I first read this Psalm, I imagined a fishing net hidden in murky water. The feelings of entrapment and terror took me to the scene from Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King when Frodo loses his way in the shadowy cave and is captured by the spider’s deadly web.

In the midst of his greatest need, Frodo is both swaddled like a baby (birth) and wrapped like a mummy (death). Sam, his faithful companion, later delivers him, for he was not himself and could not save himself. How like the deliverance of our faithful God, who companions us and champions us. Consider Lazarus bound for death but called forth from the tomb by Jesus, the victorious resurrection of Jesus himself, and the promise of new life for all who believe. (Romans 6:3-4) – Lisa <><
