A Heap of Empty Words (Matthew 6)

words pile scraps

Matthew 6:7-8
Jesus said, “When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”

You are there in the midst of my prattle
and my hiding

Thank you for your patient presence
Thank you for calling me again to what is deeper and true

Forgive me for defaulting to well-worn words
Empty language borrowed from ritual or even scripture
Help me come to you honest and real
nothing veiled, nothing hidden
Help me come to you present and fresh
new every morning

Matthew 6:9-10
Jesus said, “Pray then in this way: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

Glory to You, Heavenly One
Abba, Maker, Creator
I long for your kingdom, the fullness of your grace and victory

The longing is a sign of you in me
Abide more and more, so I not only long but look and see
Abide forever, so I not only long but pray and speak and act
Full-filling your words
now mine

Send Us Forth, a prayer based on Mark 6.6-13

walk-shoes-walking-feet-grey-gravel-1-1024x534

Based on Mark 6:6-13 NRSV

Jesus,
In the midst of our changing times
In the midst of our brokenness
Our division
Our violence
Our prejudice
Draw us again to your side
Call us and send us in your name

Give us the courage to travel light
To divest and downsize
And embrace the freedom that it brings

Give us the blessing of being fully present
Of trusting you for provision for ourselves
And your saving work
In the moment it is needed

Give us the wisdom to know our role
To move on from failure and rejection
To move on from accomplishment and welcome
The authority you give us does not dictate response
Nor is our faithfulness measured by the response

Ours is to go, to walk and to offer
To proclaim your deliverance and offer healing for body and soul
To proclaim your welcome and offer blessing no matter the location
To proclaim your repentance and offer your salvation and hope

We bow, humbly, before the honor of you choosing us
We rise to walk with you
Grant us the authority and grace and strength we need
Send us forth to do your bidding

Prayer- Trust and Time

trust

Jesus, your love enfolds us in radiant glory
The light of your presence is our peace
Receive the sacrifice of our trust and time

Jesus, your love transforms us from the inside out
Form us
Focus us with your intimate abiding
Receive the sacrifice of our trust and time

Jesus, your love is the rhythm of a God breathed life
Set the pace
Open the way step by step
We yield to your creative work, neither resisting it nor trying to speed it up

Receive the sacrifice of our trust and time
For the honor and glory of your name
For the building of your kingdom
For the saving of our souls. Amen

This prayer was inspired by the January 25th devotion in Jesus Calling by Sarah Young.

Dear Rummage Sale Volunteers

rummage sale stock photoDear rummage sale volunteers,
Thank you for your service and sacrifice for this event. You are making blessings possible.

Thank you for welcoming our community with peace and grace even when you are tired or they are tired, when you are stressed or they are stressed, when you are cranky or they are cranky. Be Jesus. Many have never met him.

Thank you for helping us to live simpler lives, for helping us share, for meeting the needs of many who shop this way all the time. Be Jesus. Many have never met him.

Thank you for being present to what’s going on around you- to noticing the look in someone’s eyes, the shuttered sigh, the weariness, the distraction, the grasping. Take time for conversation. How may I help you today? How may I pray for you today? Take your time. Let it be a different experience. They may think they’ve come for a bargain, but God has other plans. You are a part of that plan. Be Jesus. Many have never met him.

You being human, being grace, being Christ, will be a surprise and a healing balm to all who come here. Your prayers and presence have opened the doors to the very presence of God. Make space in you for others to sense it and be drawn to Jesus through it.

The joy of the Lord is your strength.
The hope of Jesus is your purpose.

Thanks be to God and thank you my dear sisters and brothers. – Lisa <><

The 2016 TED Talk Experiment – Week 3

TED talk blog graphic 2
Here’s what I chose for week 3

Everything you think you know about addiction is wrong
Johann Hari
TED Global London, June 2015
A compelling argument on what drives addiction and a call to change the way we treat addicts. “The opposite of addiction is not sobriety; the opposite of addiction is connection.”

A musical escape into a world of light and color
Kaki King
TED Women, May 2015
Creative and Cool. I especially enjoyed the meditative qualities of the third song.

How Great Leaders Inspire Action
Simon Sinek
TEDX Puget Sound, September 2009
Have you ever heard someone explain something and it’s so simple and so obvious you think, “Of course, why haven’t I been doing that?” No wonder it’s the third most popular talk of all time. This one is worth watching a few times and sharing with others.

All it Takes is Ten Mindful Minutes
Andy Puddicombe
TED Salon London, November 2012
Brief, interesting talk on the life and brain benefits of practicing how to be fully present. Going to give this a try- being mindful, not juggling. 🙂

An Underwater Art Museum, Teeming with Life
Jason deCaires Taylor
Mission Blue II, October 2015
The artist creates underwater sculpture gardens which work in harmony with the growth of coral and other sea life. The sea takes the art and makes it so much more. “Nothing man made can every match the imagination of nature.”

I’m trying an experiment in 2016. Maybe you’d like to try it with me.

Here’s where I am
I’m tired of the spin. I’m tired of ideas, news, and entertainment really being one long sales pitch for profit or power.

I’m longing for creativity, curiosity, and inspiration. I’m in search of passionate people willing to speak to the truth and complexity of living with a heart of hope. I want to hear from authentic humans who are in the trenches working for the greater good.

I think I’ve found them in the TED community.

“TED is a global community, welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world. We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world. On TED.com, we’re building a clearinghouse of free knowledge from the world’s most inspired thinkers — and a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other, both online and at TED and TEDx events around the world, all year long.”

TED’s been around for 30 years. I’ve heard about them and even watched a couple of talks, but I’ve never spent any concentrated time mining the good stuff. So….

Here’s the plan
Watch 5 enthusiastic, inspiring TED Talk presenters a week for a year.
Apply and share the goodness.
