Sermon Recording- The Who, When, Where of Love (Luke 4:14-30)

no-them only us

Sermon Series: What’s Love Got To Do With It?
What’s love got to do with it? Everything! It’s the who, what, when, where, how and why of our words and actions as follower of Jesus Christ.

Cornerstone Scripture for the Series: 1 John 4:15-17
God abides in those who confess that Jesus is the Son of God, and they abide in God. So we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them. Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness on the day of judgment, because as he is, so are we in this world.

Message: The Who, When, Where of Love
Scripture: Luke 4:14-30
Offered 7/24/16 at Trinity United Methodist Church, Sarasota Florida

Love = Agape
Sacrificial, Unconditional, Makes the first move
Love is a choice tied to an action
Not so much an emotion but a motivation

The folks in Jesus’ hometown of Nazareth reject him because they want the miracles and blessings all to themselves, like the seagulls in Finding Nemo– Mine! Mine! Mine! But the who, when, and where of love is the movement of me to we. It’s been that way from the beginning. – Lisa Degrenia <><

There’s no us and them, there’s only us. – Lisa Degrenia <><

Prayer: Making Room (Luke 2:1-7)

change sheets
Reading: Luke 2:1-7

She gave birth to her firstborn, a son.
She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger,
because there was no room for them in the inn.
– Luke 2:7

Prayer: Making Room
No room in the inn
I can understand this
There’s only so much space
And it’s already taken
It’s simple
Factual

But your blessed Word says more
No room for them in the inn

Them
Joseph and Mary are them
Unlike me and mine
Suspicious strangers
With complicated needs

I can’t bring them in
No time
No room

I won’t bring them in
Give them access to all I have
All I’ve worked for
All I love

It isn’t wise
It isn’t safe

The stable is for them
Stay there
Over there
that hidden place
that place in the back
that place for animals
away from where I live
not here with me and mine

But
I want Jesus
and
Jesus is them

There’s no room for him
if there’s no room for them

That’s who Jesus is
That’s what Jesus does
He makes room

Born in a stable
making room
for the humble and the homeless

King of kings
making room
for the rich and the royal

An outsider
making room
for those who’ve been
turned away
left out
rejected

An insider
making room
for the distinguished and established

A laborer
making room

Well educated
making room

A migrant, a refugee
making room

making room
making room
always making room

That’s who you are Jesus
That’s what you do
You make room

You’ve even made room for me

Now make room in me
Forgive me
Change me
Teach me
To do what you do
To make room

Sermon Series Recordings: Building the Beloved Community, Messages from the One Another Passages

building the beloved community with frame
Sermon Series- Building the Beloved Community

At the Last Supper, Jesus said, “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

A look at other “one another” statements from Scripture helps us understand what Jesus’ command means for our day and age.

Day 3 Reading: Luke 1:26-38
Mary and the Holy Spirit

The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you…
– Luke 1:35

Prayer: Mary’s Welcome
Holy Spirit, come
Into the smallness of my life
Into the bewilderment of my being
Into fears which must be faced

Holy Spirit, come
Into the backwoods of my world
Into the places people forget
Into places people put down… what good can come from there

Holy Spirit, welcome
Here am I, the servant of the Lord
Let it be with me according to your word
Amen

Prayer: No Partiality

partiality favoritismActs 10:28b, 34 CEB
God’s shown me that I should never call a person impure or unclean…. I really am learning that God doesn’t show partiality to one group of people over another.

We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this kind of poverty. -Mother Teresa

Prayer: No Partiality
Author of Life
Father of heirs and orphans
Sustainer of rich and poor

Lord of the Nations
Salvation of saint and sinner
Wisdom of educated and ignorant

all people are made in your image
all are valuable
all are beloved
all are wanted

Forgive me for labeling
judging
excluding
presuming

Change my heart and ways
to match yours
no partiality
only welcome
Amen

Image of Love

Diversity is a Beautiful Thing by Donna Sullivan-Thomson

Image of Love was one of the first songs God ever gave me. It came at a point in my life when I was overwhelmed with how cruel we could be to one another. I believe the first step to real and lasting peace is for us to learn to see all people as human beings, known by God, loved by God, and made in the image of God. (Genesis 1:26-27) Cruelty gains a foothold when another person is objectified, or at the least, seen as less than human. – Lisa <><

When we hear and heed the call to be loved, we can heave a sigh of relief and realize we don’t hold reality together by our efforts; we don’t have to spend ourselves creating and defending a self-image. God has given us our self-image as a free gift; we are created in the image of God, and we are forgiven sinners. God has called us into being; we are not our own creator; and we are not expected to be our own redeemer.
– Gregory S. Clapper, Living Your Heart’s Desire

O Lord, soften and subdue, inspire and thrill, and raise us on to the level of such glorious communion with You that we may catch Your likeness.
– Oswald Chambers

1 John 4:16b NRSV
God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them.

I have decided to stick with love.
Hate is too great a burden to bear.
– Martin Luther King, Jr.

Image of Love
How can you say I’m not worthy?
How can you say I’m not whole?
I am a child of my Maker
Whose healing can reach every soul.

I am made in the image. My value’s secure.
I am made in the image of God.
I am made in the image of One who is pure.
I am made in the image of Love.
I am made in the image of Love.
Praise be to God. All praise be to God.
I am made in the image of Love.

How can I judge my neighbor?
How can I hate and pass by?
I am a child of my Maker
Their worth I can never deny.

We are made in the image. Our value’s secure.
We are made in the image of God.
We are made in the image of One who is pure.
We are made in the image of Love.
We are made in the image of Love.
Praise be to God. All praise be to God.
We are made in the image of Love.

Sisters and brothers come take a hand.
Together we’ll travel the path.
Breathing and dancing the journey
till we are brought home at the last.

Come let us worship. Come let us sing.
We are made in the image of God.
Let glory and honor and thanks take to wing.
We are made in the image of Love.
We are made in the image of Love.
Praise be to God. All praise be to God.
We are made in the image of Love.
Praise be to God. All praise be to God.
We are made in the image of Love.
