#LukeActs2014: Hold On (Luke 8:40-48)

woman with vielThis is the third time I’ve returned to write about the woman with the issue of blood. I so admire her perseverance and courage. This amazing woman, who remains hopeful after so many years of chronic pain, loneliness, and disappointment. Her condition labels her unclean, separating her from the worshiping community and table fellowship. Her condition robs her of time, companionship, energy and money. It would have been easy for her to simply give up due to the exhaustion and letdowns of daily living. Yet she does not lose faith. She continues to reach out for healing. – Lisa <><

Luke 8:40-48 NIV
Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying.

As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped.

“Who touched me?” Jesus asked.

When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.”

But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.”

Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”

Hold On, by Lisa Ann Moss Degrenia
For twelve long years she had suffered
The life leaking from her body
Doctor after doctor
Disappointment after disappointment
Draining her emotions, her energy
and her bank account
The friends were few
The touches even fewer
For she and all she touched were named unclean

Yet she held on to hope
She held on for so long
How, in the midst of all the misery could she cling to it?
I wonder if I could
I wonder

Her faith
Her hope
Grow me to be like her, Jesus
Feel me reaching for healing, too
Send out your power again
So I too may be whole
And at peace
Send it out for all of us, Jesus
