Advent Photo-A-Day: Day 3, Peace

cross candleThe thought behind the photo:
Before today, I’d never thought of peace in the context of light. Zechariah’s song brought them together for me. (Luke 1:67-79) His long silence shatters, like fireworks breaking open the night sky. Prophecy. Praise. Promise. Gabriel brought God’s Good News and now Zechariah can see if for himself. Everything Zechariah missed in the darkness of his hopelessness now shines with recognition.

With light comes peace

  • A night light to guard against the monsters
  • Street lights and traffic lights to make the way home safe
  • An addiction finally brought to light and healing (You’re only as sick as your secrets.)
  • The whistleblower shedding light on corruption and injustice
  • Education bringing greater equality and opportunity (enlightenment)

Jesus: Light of the World, Prince of Peace

SCRIPTURE: Luke 1:78-79 NRSV
By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

The December 3, 2013 devotion from http://umrethinkchurch.tumblr.com
SCRIPTURE: Psalm 122:6-9 NRSV
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May they prosper who love you.
Peace be within your walls, and security within your towers.”
For the sake of my relatives and friends I will say, “Peace be within you.”
For the sake of the house of the LORD our God, I will seek your good.

Carol L. Wade, in Feasting on the Word: Year A, Volume 1, writes: “Whenever we travel, the place we have been leaves a reminder, and we are transformed by its memory. In God’s house, the residue is peace.”

What will remain with you after this Advent journey? How will you spread the peace that God has given—the peace that surpasses all understanding—with others?
