The Power of a Whisper
Day 2 Reading: 1 Samuel 3
Pastor Lisa’s Journal
As Samuel grew up, the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. – 1 Samuel 3:19
God calls to little Samuel before the child even knows God. God is persistent and patient in reaching out to Samuel. With the help of Eli, Samuel comes to realize the voice he is hearing is God.
Now the problem isn’t who was speaking, but what is being said. Samuel is afraid to deliver God’s message of consequence to Eli. Even though Eli had failed himself, his sons, and God, he would not fail Samuel. Eli creates the space for Samuel to speak the hard truth. Because of this, Samuel gains the experience and courage to continue to speak God’s truth, no matter how difficult that might be.
Listening and responding to God’s whispers can be difficult, especially when it involves consequences of poor choices. Creating space for speaking and receiving the truth is one of the most loving and faithful things we can do.
Lord Jesus, you are the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Help me to handle your truth well. Spoken with grace, not used as a weapon. Spoken with clarity, not hidden in double talk and evasion. Fill me with the courage and wisdom to make space for the truth I need to hear and others need to hear, for the truth I need to speak and others need to speak. Thank you for your persistent and honest love of all people. Amen.
