Gospel of John Reading Plan
Day 34 Reading:
John 18:28-40

Bringing the Word to Life
Wear purple today as a statement that you believe Jesus is King of kings.

Pastor Lisa’s Journal
Then Jesus answered, “I am not an earthly king. If I were, my followers would have fought when I was arrested by the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.”
– John 18:36 (NLT)

The Jewish leaders find Jesus guilty of blaspheme. The sentence is death, but they do not have the authority to kill him. So, in the middle of the night, they bring Jesus to the Roman Governor Pilate, since he is the only one who can order an execution. Pilate begins to question Jesus about truth and the location of his kingdom.

Jesus says his kingdom is not of this world. His answer is simple and yet deep.

  1. Jesus’ Kingdom is from another place. It is God’s in-breaking of the Kingdom of Heaven on earth through him.
  2. Jesus’ Kingdom goes beyond national boundaries/culture and beyond time itself. It is a present and future reality.
  3. Jesus’ Kingdom isn’t based in human power or constructs. It often looks upside down to the world, since it values people and conduct the world does not value.

1 Timothy 6:11-16 (NRSV)
Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. In the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you to keep the commandment without spot or blame until the manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ, which he will bring about at the right time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords. It is he alone who has immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see; to him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.

Prayer: We pray as Jesus taught us…
Father, your name is hallowed in heaven;
hallow it on earth, in me, in my family, in my town.

O Father, your Kingdom has come in heaven, cause it to come on earth,
in my house, in my neighborhood, in my church, in Florida, in the United States.

O Father, your Kingdom come, your will be done on Main Street and Wall Street,
on Pennsylvania Avenue and Madison Avenue, as it is in heaven.

O Father, your will is done in heaven, make it done on earth,
in workplaces, in schools, in courtrooms, in prisons,
in hospitals, the halls of government, in refugee camps, on battle lines

Your kingdom come in Seattle and Hollywood,
Nashville and Tallahassee, Chicago and New York.

Your kingdom come in Mexico City and Tokyo and Baghdad
in Kabul and Calcutta and Port-au-Prince
in Washington DC and Ivory Coast and Tunisia and Cairo.

Give us this day our daily bread,
on earth as it is in heaven

Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us,
on earth as it is in heaven

Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,
on earth as it is in heaven

For Thine is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory forever. Amen.
