Gospel of John Reading Plan
Day 33 Reading: John 17:1-26

Bringing the Word to Life
Say a special prayer today for the unity of God’s family all over the world and that many would come to faith in Jesus Christ.

Pastor Lisa’s Journal
Scripture
My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.
John 17:15 (NIV)

Observation
At the end of their meal together, Jesus offers an extended prayer for himself, for his followers, and for those who will be followers in the future. Protection and unity are two major themes of the prayer.

Application
In order for us to share Christ with others we must engage others and the evil of this world. It is worth the risk to join Jesus in his mission to save the world. In joining him, Jesus does not leave us defenseless. Jesus prays and works for our protection.

Today’s prayer litany combines a quote from Henri Nouwen, two Scriptures, and some original responses.

A Prayer for Following Jesus into the World
ONE VOICE:
To live in the world without belonging to the world summarizes the essence of the spiritual life. The spiritual life keeps us aware that our true house is not the house of fear, in which the powers of hatred and violence rule, but the house of love, where God resides. – Henri Nouwen, Behold the Beauty of the Lord

ALL VOICES: Psalm 28:7a-8 (NRSV)
The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts…
The Lord is the strength of his people;
he is the saving refuge of his anointed.

ONE VOICE:
The world is full of evil. The world is full of need.
The world is full of people who do not understand God’s love and saving power.

ALL VOICES:
Jesus, we follow you out into the world,
recognizing the danger, recognizing you are greater.
Watch over us as we strengthen our neighbors with your kindness and mercy.
Defend us as we build up the weak with your wisdom and healing.
Guard us as we shield the vulnerable with your grace and provision.

ONE VOICE: Ephesians 6:10-11 (NRSV)
Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power.
Put on the whole armor of God,
so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

ALL VOICES:
Pray for us Jesus, as we stand against those who would pray upon us or others.
Fight for us Jesus, as we work for justice and freedom for all people.
Protect us Jesus, as we offer your hope, your peace and your gift of new life.
May your Glory shine in every eye. May your Kingdom come in every heart. Amen.
