Worship Resource- I Will Rise (John 11)

The Raising of Lazarus, Icon by unknown artist

The Orthodox Church designates the Saturday before Palm Sunday as Lazarus Saturday. At this service they celebrate the raising of Lazarus of Bethany by Jesus. (John 11) The joy of the service is a welcome break between the self examination and penitence of The Great Lent (the first 40 days of the season) and the solemn mourning of Holy Week (the remembrance of the last 6 days of Jesus’ life).

Worship on Lazarus Saturday contains an extended, chanted prayer called The Canon of the Raising of Lazarus the Righteous. The spoken portion of the following liturgy is adapted from ode four of this prayer. The sung response is the first verse and chorus of the poignant worship song I Will Rise (CCLI #5183450).

May Christ call you forth to new life, today and everyday. -Lisa <><

Liturgy: I Will Rise
VOICE ONE
O Lord, You shed tears for Lazarus, revealing Your humanity.
You raised him from the dead, revealing your divinity.
You are the Son of God.

VOICE TWO
Lifeless, he heard Your command, “Lazarus, come forth,”
and bound with grave-clothes he leapt up at once, bearing witness to Your power.

VOICE ONE
You broke open the belly of Hell.
You made the tears of Martha and Mary to cease.
You raised up a man four days dead and he worshipped you.

ALL SPEAKING:
O Lord, we sing the praises of Your might.
O Christ, we sing the praises of Your Passion.
Through Your might and tender mercy You worked a miracle.
Through Your Passion and tender mercy you won our salvation.

ALL SINGING
There’s a peace I’ve come to know
Though my heart and flesh may fail
There’s an anchor for my soul
I can say it is well
Jesus has overcome
And the grave is overwhelmed
The victory is won
He is risen from the dead
And I will rise when He calls my name
No more sorrow no more pain
I will rise on eagle’s wings
Before my God fall on my knees and rise
I will rise

VOICE TWO: 1 Peter 2:4-6
Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in scripture: “See, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

ALL SINGING
There’s a peace I’ve come to know
Though my heart and flesh may fail
There’s an anchor for my soul
I can say it is well
Jesus has overcome
And the grave is overwhelmed
The victory is won
He is risen from the dead
And I will rise when He calls my name
No more sorrow no more pain
I will rise on eagle’s wings
Before my God fall on my knees and rise
I will rise
