Gospel of John Reading Plan
Day 3 Reading: John 2:1-25
Bringing the Word to Life
Pray that the presence and glory of the Lord would be revealed in our church and every church, never abused or misused.
Pastor Lisa’s Journal
Scripture
Making a whip of cords, Jesus drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.
– John 2:15 (NRSV)
Observation
Jesus comes to the temple in Jerusalem and doesn’t like what he sees. All of the business surrounding the temple sacrifices is now overshadowing the true mission of the temple- connecting people to God. Jesus makes a whip, drives out the livestock and overturns the money changers’ tables.
Application
What needs to be driven out of the “Father’s House” (church) today?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, you gather us together for worship and prayer, forgiveness and healing, community with you and with others. Forgive us for losing sight of your agenda and for all the obstacles we put in the way of people connecting with you. Come again and cleanse your house. Drive out the mistrust, false teaching and prejudice. Turn over the tables of gossip, hypocrisy and apathy. Empty us of consumerism and judging one another. Return us to truth, love, humility and charity. Fill your house with welcome, growth, and saving power. Bathe us in your grace so everything we do draws people to you and brings honor to your name, now and always. Amen.
