Gospel of John Reading Plan
Day 1 Reading: John 1:1-28
Bringing the Word to Life
Decide when and where you will do your daily Gospel of John reading. Mark it in your calendar as appointments with Jesus, the Word made flesh.
Pastor Lisa’s Journal
John came as a witness to testify concerning the light so that through him all might believe.
– John 1:7 (NRSV)
John the Baptist is preaching and teaching in the wilderness. Some authorities question him, asking if he is the Messiah, Elijah or the Prophet. He tells them no. He is preparing the way for the Messiah, Jesus.
John is clear about who he is and his purpose: I am a witness who testifies so that others might believe. Simple. Clear. Powerful. He not only knows his purpose but lives it consistently.
The two most important days in your life
are the day you are born and the day you find out why.
How can I be useful, of what service can I be?
There is something inside me, what can it be?
– Vincent Van Gogh
Jesus, Word of God, Light of Life, thank you for John’s story. Grant me the same clarity and conviction about the calling you have placed on my life. Help me to live in such a way that my words and actions are a consistent testimony to you and your truth. Help me to make the way straight to you. Show me where I am a stumbling block, where I am putting confusing curves in the path, where I hide the way. In your great mercy forgive me, heal me, make me new. Help me to be clear, authentic, and full of your grace, truth and light, now and always. To the glory of your name and the salvation of all I meet. Amen.
