John Day 1: Clarity of Purpose

Gospel of John Reading Plan
Day 1 Reading:
John 1:1-28

Bringing the Word to Life
Decide when and where you will do your daily Gospel of John reading. Mark it in your calendar as appointments with Jesus, the Word made flesh.

Pastor Lisa’s Journal
Scripture
John came as a witness to testify concerning the light so that through him all might believe.
– John 1:7 (NRSV)

Observation
John the Baptist is preaching and teaching in the wilderness. Some authorities question him, asking if he is the Messiah, Elijah or the Prophet. He tells them no. He is preparing the way for the Messiah, Jesus.

Application
John is clear about who he is and his purpose: I am a witness who testifies so that others might believe. Simple. Clear. Powerful. He not only knows his purpose but lives it consistently.

Prayer
The two most important days in your life
are the day you are born and the day you find out why.
-Mark Twain

How can I be useful, of what service can I be?
There is something inside me, what can it be?
– Vincent Van Gogh

Jesus, Word of God, Light of Life, thank you for John’s story. Grant me the same clarity and conviction about the calling you have placed on my life. Help me to live in such a way that my words and actions are a consistent testimony to you and your truth. Help me to make the way straight to you. Show me where I am a stumbling block, where I am putting confusing curves in the path, where I hide the way. In your great mercy forgive me, heal me, make me new. Help me to be clear, authentic, and full of your grace, truth and light, now and always. To the glory of your name and the salvation of all I meet. Amen.

  1. S = John 1: 14 — The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
O = At the beginning of this book, John gives the background of Jesus. He explains how Jesus was with God but now has come to earth and why Jesus has come to earth. He also explains why God sent him. The second part of the reading is John’s account of his conversation with the priests and Levites about the fact that he is not the Messiah even though he is baptizing and that the true Messiah is among them.
A = Lessons learned: I am saved by grace, not because of someone else securing my salvation. Examples to be followed or avoided: Never be afraid to confess your belief in Jesus Christ.
P = Dear heavenly Father, today I pray that your light will shine bright to all those who don’t believe in you and that the brilliance of that light will convict all of your followers to be a witness for you. In Jesus’ name, I pray.
