Devotion: Showers of Blessings

Leaving me speechless by Catrin Welz-Stein

Leaving me speechless by Catrin Welz-Stein

Isaiah 55:10-11
As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

Thanksgiving is the season we count our blessings. Food… family… health… Is God’s Word part of your list? God’s Word is a blessing we often forget, even though it is so very powerful, creative and effective. It accomplishes God’s purpose and that purpose is gracious and good.

What is God’s desired purpose?
To bring cleansing: water
To bring growth: bud and flourish
To bring sustainability: a cycle of seeds to be planted again and again
To bring nourishment: bread for the eater

Isaiah 51:16
I have put my words in your mouth and covered you with the shadow of my hand– I who set the heavens in place, who laid the foundations of the earth, and who say to Zion, “You are my people.”

Are our eyes open to these great blessings?
This thanksgiving, will we choose to plant and tend the seeds?
To eat and share the Bread of Life in our mouths?

Prayer: Pour Out Your Word
Almighty Father, Maker of Heaven and Earth,
We praise you for your Word
It is a creative, powerful, and gracious blessing
It waters our dry souls and the wasteland of a world with hope.
It brings growth and goodness
Healing and perseverance
Nourishment and new life

Pour out your Word on us
Rain down your love and mercy
Bring a deluge of peace to us and our world
Help us to receive your blessing and rejoice in you

Glory to you, our Provider and Strength
Glory to you, our Counselor and Guide
Glory to you, who made your Word flesh in Jesus so we might be saved.
In His name we pray. Amen.
